The Federal Communications Commission is preparing to update their rules and regulations regarding the EAS system. EAS is the Emergency Activation System required of all licensed radio, television, and cable outlets, and is used to warn the public in the event of an emergency.

The new protocols will allow, not only national and state activations, but also permit local Emergency Management Organizations, such as Anderson County Emergency Services, to develop systems for local activations with participating radio stations, and other electronic media outlets.

Anderson County Emergency Services is currently putting in place such a system for local radio stations, referred to "Radio Ready." This system will allow the automatic and timely transmissions of emergency announcements and notifications in the event of a major emergency or disaster.
